AB In Russia, the general approach to HIV surveillance is through extended
program of screening for anti-HIV. Specifically designed quality control
program which we have performed among 20 laboratories in St. Petersburg
and 90 labs throughout Russia and CIS by using coded sera panels has
shown 92% positive sera reactivity in St. Petersburg and 87% in other
laboratories. The negative sera reactivity was 94% and 95%, accordingly.
These results show that low anti-HIV seroprevalence in Russia reflects
the real epidemiologic situation. The incidence of new cases of HIV
infection in St. Petersburg in 1993 was more than two times higher than
the yearly mean for the previous five years. Taken together with the
predominant heterosexual transmission of HIV during last three years and
the circulation of the virus within the population of residents
(preliminary studies have shown that at least B subtype is present)
these data suppose negative prognosis for the future development of
HIV/AIDS epidemic in St. Petersburg and in Russia.
